                                                                                                Spring 2017

Dear Northwestern NROTC Alumni and Friends,

The NROTC Scholarship Fund is fortunate to have a small group of donors who have consistently contributed to grants for our Midshipmen. Their reasons for giving to the Fund vary. Many do so as a way of giving back to a program that was an integral part of their college experience and helped prepare them for success on active duty and beyond. Recently we heard from an NU NROTC alum who has a very personal reason to give. Dr. Shannon Kraft (NU WCAS, ’97) was a 1994 NROTC Scholarship Fund recipient and cites her grant as a key factor that enabled her to continue her studies at Northwestern:

The scholarship was instrumental in my decision to stay at Northwestern.  I was a walk-on College Programmer.  As much as I was enjoying my education at NU, the financial burden was not insignificant.  I was considering transferring to a school in my home state.  The scholarship helped to defray some of the costs, which made staying at NU an option for me.  The impact, however, was more than financial.  It was a validation that my contribution to the Unit was valued.  I was motivated to continue at NU.

Upon graduation, Dr. Kraft served as a Logistics officer in the Marine Corps for six years. She then completed medical school and is currently an Assistant Professor and staff Otolaryngologist with the University of Kansas Health System.

Dr. Kraft’s story is a very tangible reminder of why the NROTC Scholarship Fund exists: to help our Midshipmen complete their studies and enter service debt free. Because of your generous donations, this year the board voted to award $60,000 to 10 very deserving midshipmen. If you have donated in the past, thank you for your generosity and we hope you will donate again this year. If you haven’t, please consider a contribution this year. Every dollar of your donation goes directly toward grants for Midshipmen of the Northwestern NROTC Unit, and your contribution is tax deductible.  Thank you for your consideration.

Please complete the enclosed form and send it today. We also encourage you to submit updates and alumni news for inclusion in an upcoming Crow’s Nest and on the unit’s alumni website www.nu-nrotc.org. Even if you choose not to make a donation at this time, we would love to hear from you.

Best Regards,
